The results of anaerobic treatment of citrus wastes using an upflow fixed film reactor with ceramic raschig rings as support media, will be presented. Laboratory scale tests were made varying the organic load applied by means of hydraulic retention time (Oh) and substrate concentration (So) combinations. The range explored was between 1 and 4 days, and 1000 to 4000 mg/L COD respectively. Process efficiency (E) varied between 77.5 and 96.6% with different experimental levels. Negative effect of essential oils over the digestion process was confirmed. Other process variables, such as pH, total volatile acidity, and total alcalinity were monitored. An adecuate buffer effect on the system was observed. Biogas is described regarding its CH,, C02, H2 S, 02, and N2 composition. A scaling-up of the experiment is recommended in order to obtain better information with the application of the process in industrial conditions.
