Genetic Relationships among Isolates of Sclerotium cepivorum Berk. Based on RAPD Analysis

Genetic relationships among isolates of Sclerotium cepivorum from different regions of Mexico, also one isolate from Spain and one from Venezuela were assessed based on the analysis of random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs). Five different oligonucleotide primers were used to detect genetic polymorphisms among 31 isolates from the three countries. Dendrogram indicated that the Mexican isolates formed two distinct groups, one consisted of the majority of isolates collected from a single field, and the other included isolates collected from different regions of Mexico and the Venezuelan isolate. The Spanish isolate occupied a unique terminal branch on the dendrogram, being the most divergent isolate in this analysis. These results suggest that considerable genetic diversity is present among different isolates of S. cepivorum in Mexico.
