Phaseollin synthesis as a defense response in bean embryo axes increased in a dose-response fashion with a mixture of oligogalacturonides (polimerization degree 7-13). A 120% increase in phaseollin content was elicited with 0.2 µg.µl-1 oligogalacturonides. At the same time, a 35% decrease in elongation of the embryo axes was observed. In the presence of 100 µM IAA, phaseollin accumulation of 50% over the control was observed, but elongation of the embryos was arrested. A time-curve study showed that with either oligogalacturonides or auxin there was a transitory increase in phaseollin synthesis at 24 h after incubation. When calcium (5 mM CaCl2) was combined with either oligogalacturonides or IAA, the elicitor effect of both was lost.
