en: This paper examines the effects of family composition on performance in math and literacy tests in primary education in Latin America. Multilevel models are used to analyze the results of both tests and the answers in a questionnaire, applied by means of the Second Comparative and Explanatory regional Study ( SERCE ) to 89 , 588 sixth grade students. It seeks to investigate the variations between countries and between schools, and their interactions with the socioeconomic and academic level of the student, the school, and the country. It is observed that in most countries a significant gap exists be - tween the educational achievements of students from two-parent families and those from single-parent families or who are orphans. However, this gap narrows or disappears when it is controlled by socioeconomic level. A number of methodological conclusions are inferred.>>>
en: A trend has emerged on the poverty studies agenda that analyzes the relation between poverty and educational inequality. Available research data, including INEE reports for 2014 , suggest that the Mexican education system is permeated by a dynamic that stratifies access to learning, which, it may be inferred, increases inequalities. From this perspective, the document presents new empirical evidence of how income-based social inequality (measured in the country’s states by the Gini coefficient) is associated with education systems that are stratified socioeconomically, even when the effect of modes of schooling aimed at social disadvantages is taken into account (i.e. CONAFE and indigenous elementary schools). The available data indicate that in Mexico there are social reproduction mechanisms that effectively translate contextual inequalities into inequalities between schools, with the result that access to learning for some segments of the population is unequal.>>>

en: International research has contributed much information about the features of classrooms where students do learn; however, little has been written about what happens in classrooms where students’ performance is much lower than expected. That is why a depth study was made in which eight low performance classrooms where analyzed in Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. The results point to six major factors underlying ineffective classrooms: a) teaching strategies in the classroom; b) time use; c) attention to diversity; d) evaluation strategies; e) classroom environment; and f) the classroom as a physical space and its resources.>>>
en: The aim of this paper is to establish and analyze the factors of competency, attitude, and school environment associated with use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) among teachers in Brazil. It takes as a reference point the data gathered by the Brazilian team behind the project “Factors associated with the level of use of ICTs as a teaching and learning tool in state education institutions in Colombia and Brazil. The case of Barranquilla and Florianopolis”, which provided the results presented here. 576 surveys were applied, with a 95 percent confidence level and a margin of error of ± 4, to public elementary school teachers in Florianopolis, Brazil. The principal results indicate a low level of use of ICT s in teaching and learning processes among teachers assessed.>>>

en: The aim of this paper is to construct a questionnaire to evaluate the attitudes of students and faculty with regard to educational innovation in the university (QUACINE). Its design and development was based on Fishbein and Ajzen’s theory of reasoned action as a model of attitudinal analysis, and the use of Likert scales as a measuring tool. The questionnaire was administered to two groups of faculty and students at the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón (Spain). The results obtained in the validation process generated an attitudinal scale with high levels of reliability, content and construct validity for both groups. We believe that these technical characteristics allow the use of the QUACINE to measure these attitudes in processes of change and improvement of educational processes in higher education.>>>

en: This article discusses the results of an investigation on the role of mentoring in higher education institutions ( HEIs). The project was carried out in two phases: the first to conceptualize the skills involved in the exercise of the mentoring function from a theoretical point of view; the second incorporated the perspectives and reflections of a group of teachers/mentors on their own mentoring practice. The study was supported by a methodology of qualitative research; analysis of the results was oriented on the basis of a phenomenographic exercise and applied to the description and interpretation of data derived from holding focus groups with mentors and experts on the subject. The integration of contributions from both phases resulted in the construction of an array composed of three dimensions, six skills and 41 indicators relating to tutoring performance in HEIs.>>>

en: This qualitative research explores the reasons why women students of the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Universidad Veracruzana choose this course. The empirical data that forms the basis of this research was generated through semi-structured interviews with 20 female students of the degree. The results show that the major factors which motivated them to study mathematics are: 1 ) they realized that they were good at math; 2 ) they like math; and 3 ) influence of their teachers. It is suggested that the above factors, among others discussed in this paper, promote the development of a strong identity as good students of mathematics, which favors the choice of the university degree.>>>

en: This paper derives from the project Educational innovation and teacher training for secondary education by the Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir. Its main objective is to diagnose the skills that teachers use in their daily work using a sample of secondary school teachers from the Autonomous Community of Valencia in Spain. It presents their perceptions of their professional ethics in four dimensions: conflicts and ethical dilemmas, deontology, professional identity and ethical skills. The methodology employed is the construction and application of a scale of attitudes based on the theory of reasoned action of Ajzen and Fishbein (1980). Among the findings is the high level of self-awareness among teachers with regard to their professional ethics, and their concern with their relationship with the students and their educational work in the classroom, leaving their social role at a secondary level.>>>

en: Currently, exercising the leadership role in educational centers offering compulsory basic education in Spain is a complex and difficult task. Factors that give rise to this situation include the perceived lack of professionalism. This article is intended to provide a professional development model based on the management profile and specific training, as the path towards the professionalization of this function. To this end, it analyzes the skills and training needs of school principals from a regulatory and research frame-work. The skills profile obtained is twofold: the school principal as leader and as technical manager, but with a greater emphasis on leadership. On the basis of the skills defined various proposals are presented for improvement to the current training model, because in most communities the contents of the training courses for school principals is confined to essentially formal or management-related aspects, despite a philosophy of training them to offer effective leadership.>>>

en: In Colombia, environmental education relies on an institutional framework that received initial definition by the National Policy on Environmental Education, and has been reinforced recently with the law 1549 in 2012. However, its application cannot be said to have gone beyond the normative commitment, because there is evidence of a clear disconnect between the formal, non-formal and informal education sectors; for this reason there are serious environmental and social problems that reflect the need for training of those who make up these sectors. This work is documentary in nature and addresses, in the first place, the concept of environmental education; it then presents the evolution and the practice of this in the three sectors mentioned above; and finally proposes a series of strategies based on the concept of sustainability networks, which sketch out long-term goals for the environmental management of a complex system made up of various actors with diverse interests.>>>
