en: Intercultural universities in Mexico share a common political history in the framework of indigenous education. However, in some cases, their history, unpublished in offi cial media, has given rise to certain projects and is not recognized. Th is article off ers, on one hand, a historical tour of indigenous educational policy as it has transformed over two centuries, according to the government project of the time. On the other hand, the article reports the existence of a feasibility study aimed at analyzing the possible creation of an indigenous university in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico—which was requested and fi nanced by the organization called “Movimiento Indígena Otomí” in 2009. Th e university is now known as Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Hidalgo.>>>

en: This paper analyzes the historical and sociocultural characteristics of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, the city where Universidad Intercultural de Chiapas is located. Racism and intercultural confl ict are identifi ed as structural elements of the confl ictive relationships among the diverse ethnic groups that make up the city’s population and are reproduced in the university. Based on the refl ections of the young students who participated in a collaborative research project, the paper presents various intercultural confl icts that occur between indigenous and mestizo university students; intercultu- ral interaction is limited by the presence of striking social, economic, and academic asymmetries. An analysis of the operation of the university’s intercultural educational model sustains that native language classes and subjects from the area of community association are curricular spaces that have the potential to transform the confl ict and encourage more harmonious intercultural relations within the student community.>>>

en: This paper explores the epistemological diversity and indigenous praxis present in intercultural education, through the case of Instituto Superior Intercultural Ayuuk ( isia ) in Jaltepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Th e main objectives are to outline the range of conceptions of intercultural education, describe its key articulations, and explore the way that knowledge is conceived, constructed, and transmitted in this institute. Two arguments are stated: a) Th e lack of a predetermined meaning in intercultural higher education allows people from diverse backgrounds to become interested in and form part of this project, enabling new epistemological diversity; b) Although isia uses the praxis and social organization of the Ayuuk people, a more profound dialogue is still lacking among diverse types of knowledge and epistemological frameworks. Th erefore, isia represents an important case for exploring the negotiation among diverse perspectives to construct a unique vision of intercultural higher education.>>>

en: This article presents the results of a research project aimed at diagnosing bilingual students’ (Spanish-indigenous language) problems of written expression. Th e starting point was the assumption that these problems are the result in large part of a non- systematic immersion into Spanish. In general, the fi rst language possesses structures and discursive forms that do not coincide with those of the second language, which is not taken into account by the Spanish courses directed to this sector of students. An analysis was made of 70 written samples, which were compared with the production of non-bilingual students. Th e main results reveal problems in the use of prepositions in Spanish, with eff ects on the logical articulation of written discourse. Th e problem must be addressed with additional language methodologies.>>>

en: In Chile, most dropouts are from the lowest income levels. Th e phenomenon can be explained as the result of various factors. Th e current document presents qualitative research aimed at determining if the family setting has more infl uence than the economic factor in motivating dropouts from ages 14 to 17, enrolled in schools in two communes in the region of Araucanía in Chile. Th e outstanding causes that infl uence dropping out include those related to the family setting, such as family problems and the economic precariousness of the home. One of the most decisive causes is related to the lack of support from the adults who are responsible for young people’s education: en emerging topic detected by several protagonists in the educational sphere.>>>

en: Abstract: Th e purpose of this article is to study the political factors that infl uence allocating the budget to Mexico’s public state universities, and to determine the degree the political party of the president, the governor, and the Congress aff ect the allocation. For this reason, an analysis was made of 32 state universities in Mexico, by means of multivariate regression analysis for panel data for the period from 1990-2009, with indicator variables on political parties, and controlling by enrollment. Th e fi nding was that the federal government rewards public state universities located in states governed by opposition parties with which it has most ideological affi nity or possibi- lities of negotiation, and punishes public state universities located in states governed by ideologically opposing parties without veto power in the legislature.>>>

en: Abstract: Service-learning is a pedagogical philosophy that seeks to encourage students’ learn- ing through their active participation in experiences associated with community service. The first part of this article compiles research centered on service-learning; the discussion indicates the absence of descriptive studies on the topic. Therefore, the second part presents the preparation of an instrument to compile information; in concrete, a questionnaire to evaluate service-learning projects from the viewpoint of university students, the general objective of this study. The instrument presented has been validated and can be transferred to other research with objectives that are the same or similar to those discussed in this article.>>>
en: The objective of this article is to comprehend the way school time and space collaborated in the construction of school culture in the elementary schools of Juchitán, Oaxaca in the period from 1880 to 1910. With the aid of documentary research, it was possible to discover and explain the way the conception and distribution of time and the representation and use of school space, in combination with social, political, and cultural events, formed part of the educational system. A description is given of the school-community relationship as a historical process that permitted understanding the school system as a dynamic, mutable, and unique organization.>>>

en: The objective of this article is to identify the regression model derived from the evaluation of teachers’ performance and to determine its impact as a predictor of the academic achievement of medical school students. A descriptive, predictive, transversal study of teacher evaluations was carried out through OPINEST 2011 , with reliability of .99, explained variance of 70.8%, an adjustment in AFC of NFI of .92 and RMSA of .064. A compilation was made of 2,091 applied records that were analyzed through multiple regression in terms of students’ fi nal achievement; a model was obtained, represented by Z ‘y=.107 Z x1+.143 Z x2+.183 Z x3+.058 Z x4+.084 Z x5+.098 Z x6 which predicts 41% of this achievement. Th e dimensions of greatest weight in the model are the psycho- pedagogical factor and that of communication and evaluation. Th e conclusion is that OPINEST2011 presents solid development that compiles suffi cient evidence of validity to evaluate the performance by competency of medical school professors; its potential as a predictor of student achievement is identifi ed.>>>
