en: This article is based on an investigation whose main purpose was to analyze students' vocational development in statuses of achievement and academic lagging in Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Chemistry at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, during 2014, by implementing Donald Super's evolutionary approach. A naturalist paradigm, a design of collective case studies of four people (two students from each academic status), four data gathering tools (in-depth interviews, semi-structured interviews, in-depth discussion meetings, and observation), and the categorical thematic analysis method were applied. It was found that there are differences in the vocational process of the four cases studied when referring to one academic status or the other, where the category of achievement is more leaning trend to a better vocational performance, even though it is not a predictor of this; while the academic lagging presents more difficulties in its different vocational stages. Therefore, it is recommended not to neglect academic, vocational and personal-social support to any of both populations, considering their particularities related to the specific vocational processes and the evaluations they carry out during the career.>>>

en: The article approaches the characteristics of the Civil Defense course given at the University of Medical Sciences of Ciego de Avila, set for the education of future doctors to face disasters and contingency situations. In previous studies, it was detected that students of medicine are not prepared to face tasks related to this when practicing their profession; that is why the objective of this article is to share with the scientific community the didactic requirements that must be assumed in the teaching-learning process of those who practice medicine, and in the educational development preparing them to face disasters and act accordingly in contingency situations from their own professional functions. The requirements aim to conceive the teaching-learning process in interrelation with the history of the medical profession; this implies a coherent and a creative way of developing historical elements and establishing empathic and interdisciplinary links with the study of the functions of today's medicine, in which the role of academic, labor, and research components are enhanced. The research methodology implemented was the experimental approach in its variant of pedagogical pre-experiment, with pretest and posttest designs, with a group of students of the career of Medicine. These students took part in surveys and interviews and were observed during the teaching-learning process in order to elaborate the diagnosis. Documents were reviewed and contrasted with the didactic theory; the teaching-learning process was modeled with the new didactic requirements; finally, a pedagogical experiment was carried out, and it let improving the design of the Civil Defense course for the Medicine career. The posttest results show significant changes in the teaching-learning process, which confirmed the idea that the more participative and contextual is the process, the more effective is the education and the greater is the preparation the future doctors acquire to face disasters and contingency situations from their professional functions.>>>

en: The present investigation aims to expose the implementation of a management strategy, in which the objective was to strengthen the academic staff profile, guide professors in an educative context of a high education institution, and help their professional development, so that to contribute positively in the training of university students. For that purpose, it was necessary that the educative institution had an administrative-academic management that favored the integration of professors with the necessary profile for the formation of the university students. This work was based on the analysis of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) results and polls carried out with the studied population allowing the implementation of a strategy. This, in turn, allowed the application of a theoretical-methodological system, having as a result the increase from 32% to 58% in the recognition of professors with an ideal profile, awarded by the "Programa para el Desarrollo Profesional Docente" (PRODEP), and an increment from 12% to 31% of the professor-researcher participation in the "Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología".>>>

en: This qualitative research seeks to understand the current situation of choral conducting studies in Costa Rica and Spain, emphasizing on the tools required to work with children´s choirs. The curriculum of choral conducting careers at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica and the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid was studied by means of an analysis of documents and an analytic comparison with the SWOT method. The study of plans primarily focused on subjects related to pedagogy and singing as essential foundations in the specific area of children's choirs. Additionally, an analysis of interviews to choral directors from both countries visualized the experiences of directors in their performance with children´s choirs, what skills were acquired in their undergraduate education, as well their perception of what should change or adjust in the curriculum. Significant shortcomings were perceived in teacher's training in relation with the subjects of the career. A strengthening with more contents in teaching methodologies and pedagogical resources was suggested.>>>

en: Background: Recent researches have shown the importance of extracurricular activities and leisure time in children of school age, especially within today's society where the increasing labour activity of families makes difficult to spend time with children. In this sense, sport practice has a central role, as it will help to combat sedentary lifestyle produced by digital leisure. Aims: This study aims to determine the extracurricular sports and leisure activities done by a sample of primary school students, analysing its relation to the type of school in which they are enrolled. Design: A descriptive and cross-sectional study of multifactorial and univariate design was conducted. Respondents: A total of 786 students from Primary Education participated in this research. They were selected by using a random cluster sampling. Measurements: This study employed an Ad-hoc questionnaire consisting of 12 items related to extra-curricular sport practice. Analysis: SPSS 22.0 software was used for statistical analyses by using cross tables, ANOVA or T of Student depending on the nature of the variables. Results: The results showed acceptable measures of sports practiced, high percentages of screen leisure and low measurements of time which is spent in reading and with peers. According to the type of school, it was revealed that the schoolchildren of private schools practiced more sports, mainly in teams. Students in public schools preferred individual sports and spending more time with friends and in digital entertainment. Thus, the relationship between the type of school and non-curricular activities is shown, mainly for reasons of ideology and facilities.>>>

en: This article, based on the Psicology Masters Degree thesis by aims to describe the levels (1) to describe the levels of self-regulation and reading comprehension of scientific expository texts; (2) to establish the relationship between self-regulation and reading comprehension; and (3) to compare the performance in comprehension when the printed media (paper) or digital media (computer) is used. A quasi-experimental, quantitative, descriptive and correlative design was implemented. The sample was composed of 55 university students from four careers of Education; they were in and year of study at a regional university of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities. Three measuring instruments were used: a questionnaire of self-regulated learning and two comprehension tests based on the understanding of assessment model. The implementation was made in two consecutive moments; first, the self-questionnaire; then, the tests for reading comprehension in both media. With the data obtained, statistical tests of variance, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and means comparison with Bruner and Munzel and U-Mann Whitney's tests were calculated. In conclusion, and different from the initial statement, it was obtained that university students have an adequate level of self-regulation and low reading comprehension in both data, even the scores are relatively lower in digital data. In both data the output is inverse to the complexity of the questions. Between 1 and year, there is no increase either in the self-regulation or in reading comprehension; but, exceptionally, the career of Primary General Education specialist on Language and History did. There is a strong relationship between reading comprehension in printed media and self-regulation (ARATEX). The support does not affect reading comprehension, but individual reading skills of the subjects do. A competent reader will have similar performance in both reading supports.>>>

en: The following article describes the results of a study carried out in Costa Rica in 2011 with the objective of confirming the acquisition of reading expertise in second grade students who were taught to read with Pictophonic Strategies for two years, in comparison with other students who used the Eclectic Method during the same period of time. Reading expertise is understood as the use of two necessary procedures to decode words: the lexical route for the acknowledgment of known words, and the sub-lexical route for unknown words. An experimental pre-post design study was carried out with a control group, using the letter recognition test of the LEE Test at the beginning of the 2010 school year; and, at the end of the 2011 school year, the phonetic segmentation, word and pseudo-word reading tests were implemented. The significant differences between both methods point towards Pictophonic Strategies as a proposal that develops experienced reading.>>>

en: The analysis and information presented in this article are part of an experience developed in the research project Primera infancia: hacia una propuesta de formación contextualizada y pertinente Early Childhood: Toward a Proposal of a Professional, Contextualized, and Pertinent Formation of the Basic Education Division at the National University of Costa Rica. The information was collected with the purpose of identifying the needs for professional formation on the field of early childhood, through the perception and contributions of students in levels V and VII of their undergraduate degree in the Pedagogy career with a concentration in preschool education. This is an exploratory-type investigation aiming to know the opinions and perceptions of the students in relation with the process they go through at the university. For it, we used a questionnaire of seven open questions related to the needs of formation and concrete experiences lived during this process. As a result from this study, the analysis had a descriptive conclusion when exploring the main needs of the students. The information collected was complemented with the theory of investigation known, the contributions for the review of the whole preschool study plan, and all the knowledge built during the research project aforementioned. One of the main findings is that most of the students expressed that their formation lacks of the professional instrumentation to work with children aged zero to four years. They also said that it is very important to start working in a similar process on the earlier stages Pedagogy covers like maternal cycle and early stimulation. This systematization and analysis of the students' perception is an effort to support the review of the study plan for the Pedagogy career with concentration in preschool education. The help of the students' perceptions and experiences is a fundamental contribution in order to build a contextualized and relevant proposal; this is the main part of the research project aforementioned.>>>

en: It is well documented worldwide the low presence of women in informatics careers, and this phenomenon seems to have grown in recent years. This article describes the current situation in the Information Systems career in the School of Informatics at the National University of Costa Rica (UNA). The problem of low female participation is analyzed in two dimensions: recruitment and retention. To study recruitment, we have analyzed the institutional indices of application and admission. To study retention, we have analyzed student achievement in the programming area, because it is considered a central area in the curriculum and an area of difficulty for students. The analysis is performed using data obtained from the UNA Registration Department in a period of 8 years, from 2007 to 2014. The findings support the worldwide results about the underrepresentation of women in the career. Permanency patterns are similar for both sex, and women tend to be more effective in graduating. Additionally, the first two courses of programming seem to represent difficulties for all students, but women tend to have lower performance. In general, the study aims to be a starting point to propose educational actions to improve the rates of representation and permanence of women in the career, while increasing the number of graduates in the area; an issue that is of institutional, national and international interest.>>>

en: Two educational institutions were selected with the aim of characterizing the performance of two principals from the perspective of the educational community: teachers, students, administrative assistant and parents. In order to carry out the study, it was necessary to consider how the members of the educational community of two schools evaluate the professional performance related to the exercise of leadership, communication processes and decision making, during the internship of two CIDE graduates of the UNA. We worked the interviews and the focus groups with twenty-eight participants; later, we used the ATLAS TI tool to interpret the analysis categories. The main conclusions are that a quality management must be a process of participation, teamwork, communication and approach from the school administration to the people involved. Likewise, it is conceived that a good performance means to consider students as a priority, to help others with humility and affection, to know how to listen, to provide confidence; and that the principal considers students as a priority, and is a negotiating person who knows how to delegate. In short, a good principal is the person who can lead an institution by exercising good leadership, and, therefore, will influence the proper management of communication and decision-making.>>>

en: Pre-school education period is the foundation for children development. Teachers must reinforce students' knowledge in this stage since all the contents covered will impact throughout their lives. Due to its educational value and influence on the different aspects of children development, music should be regarded as an essential resource in these early learning stages. In this regard, this work aims to analyze if the activities including music, hearing, and sound have a positive influence on the unfolding of literacy skills on five-year-old children. To accomplish such objectives, qualitative, quantitative, and triangulation methodologies have been used by taking the content analysis from the literature review related to the topic of this investigation and then after, by using the experimental design technique (pre-test/experiment/post-test) with two design types (experimental and controlled class) from the research-action paradigm. Considering the results of this research, it can be asserted that audio-musical activities significantly influence reading and writing skills acquisition without noteworthy differences between boys and girls.>>>

The basic vision of learning science has changed as scientific culture concepts evolution and the nature of the teaching of science go along. From a model essentially based on information acquisition, science instruction has included the practice of the science method when the importance of emphasizing the development of personal skills, thinking processes, and action was considered. The concern about citizens' education in matters referring to the relationship between science and society and enlightened social participation demanded a special attention in investigation and in students' participation in issues related to urban, natural, and technological environment. This research seeks to develop an integrative model of curriculum organizations based on these three axes or perspectives: science, individual, and society. A matrix enabling the analysis of curricular proposals and organization plans of didactic units is built, as well as the observation of teachers' representations in the teaching of science.>>>

en: The systematic failure of low socioeconomic level children at school is a shared concern. What is the role of teachers and other involved individuals' beliefs in maintaining this failure? This research answers the question: Are there differences in the beliefs between student teachers, in-service teachers, and Chilean teacher educators about the teaching and learning of literacy, and early math in the context of poverty? A questionnaire with two open questions and two Likert scales were applied to 265 student teachers, 66 in-service teachers and 25 teacher educators. With qualitative data, some descriptions were organized as "visions"; and with quantitative data, conglomerates and ANOVA were analyzed, based on Z scores. The results show: 1) negative view on school, children, and vulnerable families, 2) good teacher vision centered in affective-motivational features, 3) negative view on the family context shared to the whole sample, 4) over 70% had an intermediate vision on literacy beliefs and 50% on initial mathematics beliefs, 6) complex vision was the less present, 7) in-service teachers had the most stereotypical views regarding vulnerable schools, 8) only between 10% and 30% of teacher educators had complex beliefs. These results inform teacher education institutions about the beliefs and actors to whom their strategies for change should target.>>>

en: The objectives guiding this research were to determine the dominant learning style of the first year Building engineering students (University of Seville), the influence of the style on the grades in each school subject, and if learning style is influenced by socio-demographic variables. The sample was composed of 161 students, who completed the Honey-Alonso questionnaire (CHAEA) and the CDAT. Descriptive and correlational methods were used. For the analysis of the data, a univariate (one-way ANOVA) descriptive study was performed, and the non-parametric Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, both with a confidence level of 95% (=.05) were used. The results show the predominance of the reflective style, and the fact that grades as a function of styles vary depending on the school subject. No significant differences were found in the variables gender, university admission scores, type of school (private or public) of the study centers attended previous to university. Significant differences were found for some styles in the variables age, type of university admission, and if a student had to work as well as to study. The conclusions highlight the need to develop teaching strategies that encompass all the styles to improve performance, as well as the need to modify the teaching practices for the students to develop the rest of the styles in a balanced manner. This latest aspect is important so that the students can freely operate professionally, as the Engineering profession requires having all four characteristic styles simultaneously.>>>

en: The research aimed to characterize the emotional expression of primary school children, events linked to its manifestation and its management from the perspective of the teaching staff. For this descriptive exploratory study, a non-probabilistic sample of 53 teachers from various primary schools was conformed. The study was carried out by using the analysis of documents, interviews and observation, and implementing the content analysis for interpretation. Teachers identified a predominance of pleasant emotions in school, mainly joy. The main unpleasant emotions were anxiety and anger. In the school context, the unpleasant emotions were associated with the activities and the academic demands; in the family, with conflict and little family support, fundamentally. The principal drivers of pleasant emotions in school are the group acceptance, teacher professionalism and recreation; the latter is also present in the family, together with the support, dedication and harmonious coexistence. The professor says not to possess the necessary theoretical and methodological training to direct the emotional education of their students, although they recognize its importance. It is very important to provide a more solid training that allows them to know, understand and regulate their emotions as well as enhance the emotional development of their students, creating an emotional environment which facilitates the process of learning.>>>

en: This article aims to analyze university students' perceptions about the meaning of healthy university. It arose as a result of a research process of the project Pedagogía saludable Healthy Pedagogy, carried out at the Center for Research and Teaching in Education (CIDE), National University of Costa Rica, from 2013 to 2015. The methodology implemented was based on a mixed approach, in which quantitative and qualitative aspects were considered to interpret results. The studied population was students enrolled in Education careers during 2014. A sample of 100 questionnaires with open-ended questions was randomly taken. The analysis showed the existence of several perceptions on health, as well as the presence of a trend to visualize health with a wider meaning than well-being of the body. A relevant finding was to visualize that the students' voices summon to look other factors of the university dynamic benefiting or damaging integral health. Some conclusions allow ratifying that universities, seen as learning communities, must promote the intellect development and affection from a perspective establishing a connection between the mind, body and spirit triad in order to educate responsibly and integrally. On the other hand, it is necessary to raise awareness of the fact that, within the university context, subtle relationships occur and have an impact on the health factor, and they must be reconsidered from the daily routine, the curriculum, and the institutional policies in order to intentionally legitimize healthy learning environments.>>>

en: In this work, learning assessment is discussed, assuming educational precepts for their ethical, moral and educational value. The study aims to share some ideas and to critically reflect on the persistence of the traditional evaluation practices, a kind of pedagogical pathology that is recurrently and widely criticized by authors and specialists. Certain causes, consequences and possible solutions for an educational evaluation are analyzed. Underlying issues associated with the relationship between the practices and concepts that support them are evaluated. It is concluded that the change in education and mentality, needed in this regard, is crucial to transform practices; and this will be possible if policies, strategies, implementations and actions are reconsidered to allow better pedagogical training of administrative and teaching staff in order to achieve greater efficiency and a real educational effect.>>>

In this sense, our purpose in this article leads us to question the need to promote education that catalyzes personal and structural changes to ensure sustainability and promote awareness among citizens of environmental and developmental issues overall. In defining more just and equitable development alternatives, we approach the role women play in their commitment to the environment, and the search for a better quality of life.>>>

en: This study was carried out with the objective of describing the evolution and importance of andragogical processes in the search of rural profiles committed to the university work in the development and implementation of programs and projects. Among its main contributions, the importance of knowing and teaching processes applied strictly for adults by university coordinators of programs and projects stands out. The relevance of applying this kind of knowledge will allow efficient use of institutional financial resources, particularly for the real commitment of the rural adult community towards the implementation of field activities and accomplishing, in a shorter term, the expected academic achievement. A successful project experience is described in which some andragogical strategies were applied through extension, and which produced a better participation and engagement from rural people with the projects developed by the University. Consequently, applicability of these concepts in the programs and projects of rural development promoted through universities must lay the foundation for regional rural development strategies with the ultimate goal of finding ways to improve the quality of life of people in particular scenarios.>>>
