en: This research analyzed the instruments used by the English Teaching instructors at the University of Costa Rica Atlantic Campus to evaluate the students’ oral competence. The main objective was to propose a more effective tool accordingly to the activities used to promote this competence: the rubric. This instrument fosters more objectivity benefiting not only the instructor but also the learner, since its use decreases the possibility of making evaluative mistakes that teacher might be committing. Through the development of this research, the authors will explain what a rubric is, as well as its characteristics and such advantages as the confidence students have when they know in advance what is expected from them during the evaluation activity. They will also emphasize the ease offered to the teachers to provide feedback to the learners in regards to their performance. Finally, an explanation of the construction process of a rubric is presented, as well as an example to be used as a guide for teachers to construct its own tools.>>>

en: This article presents the proposal automation section finished product warehouse area parquet Kimberly Clark, where product selection is made, inventory, palletizing and parquet final product. It is proposed to automate part of the process by reading the bar code of their products and distributing them to specific channels where the human operator intervention until the final stage of accommodation in flooring for palletizing, so that staff not have to be performing repetitive and exhausting work; and so you can keep track of detailed inventory automatically. The proposal poses to the plant in San Antonio de Belén, Heredia, Costa Rica.>>>

en: Selecting the appropriate experimental design is one of the most relevant aspects in scientific research. There are various types of experimental designs that can be used depending on the environmental conditions where the trial is conducted; however, for this research only the two most simple designs were considered: unrestricted design and randomized complete blocks (RCB). In Costa Rica, executing the trial under field conditions is enough to justify a randomized complete block design since its use has spread without assessing its efficiency. The objective of this paper was to assess the efficiency of the randomized complete block design compared to the unrestricted design for rice trials in the Guanacaste area. There are two methods to assess efficiency of an experimental design and both use the mean square error. The analysis was focused on trials with promising materials of the rice varieties and hybrids production program from CoopeLiberia RL between 2010 and 2014. Data from a blank test from the same area was also used to simulate both designs. Efficiency data obtained show that the RCB design contribution was not significant for the conditions in the Guanacaste rice area, where, in most cases, conditions do not require the use of randomized complete blocks. Choosing the RCB design based on the fact that the trial is going to conducted in the field is not enough reason to select this design. The incorrect use of RCB may represent losing accuracy to estimate the effect of treatments.>>>

en: The results shown in this article are part of a further research. The research proposes a sustainable development model for the communities Cerrillos, Sabana Bonita and Peñas Blancas of Esparza, Puntarenas. There is an analysis of data obtained through a conducted survey that searches variables related to energy, soil, water, waste, environmental training and the use of environmental management systems. The analysis is supported by other investigations done in those communities. Additionally, there is an explanation of the environmental conservation, restoration and protection done and the environmental risk and vulnerability. The aim of this research was to know the balance among the activities done by the inhabitants and the use of natural resources. The environmental issues found in those communities are: soil erosion, soil compaction by livestock, pollution of rivers by sewage of houses, pig farmers and inappropriate waste management. Furthermore, there is a landslide in the community of Peñas Blancas. However, through the Association pro cuenca del río Jabonal there are some actions to improve the environmental issues.>>>
