		<p>During the intervention, when refilling the desflurane vaporizer, we observed that the product was no longer clear (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f1">Fig. 1</xref>A). The vaporizer was removed from the anaesthesia circuit and after 1hour of observation, a supernatant was found to cover the wall of the level monitor (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f1">Fig. 1</xref>B). This discolaration, reported in the literature,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1"><sup>1</sup></xref><sup>-</sup><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3"><sup>3</sup></xref> is due to the accumulation of oxidized by-products of butylate hydroxytoluene (BHT) (E-321) (2,6-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-methylphenol, C<sub>15</sub>H<sub>24</sub>O, P. M.: 220.35) (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f2">Fig. 2</xref>) an antioxidant present in the elastomer used to seal desflurane bottles,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1"><sup>1</sup></xref><sup>,</sup><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3"><sup>3</sup></xref> authorized for use in the food industry.</p>

		<p>Desflurane must be stored at a temperature of 15 to 30 °C. The probability of yellowing is higher when this temperature is exceeded. BHT and its by-products have higher boiling points than desflurane and remain trapped in the vaporizer sink and do not flow into the gas circuit. They are not associated with deleterious effects for the patients, although the contamination made evident by BHT oxidation creates interactions of unpredictable consequences. We believe it is important to be aware of this discoloration phenomenon and prevent its occurrence.</p>

			<p>Durante una intervención, al recargar el vaporizador de desfluorano observamos que el producto había perdido su transparencia (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f3">Fig. 1</xref>A). Tras retirar el vaporizador del circuito anestésico, después de una hora de observación, quedó un sobrenadante que impregnaba la pared del testigo de nivel (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f3">Fig. 1</xref>B). El fenómeno, reportado en la literatura,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1"><sup>1</sup></xref><sup>-</sup><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3"><sup>3</sup></xref> se debe al acúmulo de derivados oxidados del hidroxitolueno butilado BHT (E-321) (2,6-bis(1,1-dimetile til)-4-metilfenol, C<sub>15</sub>H<sub>24</sub>O, P. M.: 220.35))(<xref ref-type="fig" rid="f4">Fig. 2</xref>), un anti oxidante empleado en los elastómeros que sellan las botellas de deslurano,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1"><sup>1</sup></xref><sup>,</sup><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3"><sup>3</sup></xref> autorizado en industria alimentaria.</p>

			<p>El desflurano debe almacenarse entre 15-30°C. Si se excede dicha temperatura es más probable que aparezca el amarilleamiento. BHT y derivados, tienen puntos de ebullición superiores al del desfluorano y no pasan al circuito de gas, quedando en los sumideros de los vaporizadores. No se asocian a efectos deletéreos para los pacientes, aunque la contaminación que evidencia la oxidación del BHT genera interacciones de consecuencias imprevisibles. Consideramos que es importante conocer el fenómeno, y evitar su aparición.</p>
