Abstract: Twenty species are added to the Portuguese Lepidoptera fauna, of which two are new for the Iberian Peninsula, and four species deleted, mainly as a result of fieldwork undertaken by the authors and others in 2023. In addition, second to fourth records for the country, new province records and new host-plant data for a number of species are included. A summary of recent papers affecting the Portuguese fauna is presented.

Introduction
This paper is the eighteenth in the series of annual summaries of new knowledge of Portuguese Lepidoptera. It gives records of species of Lepidoptera added to the Portuguese fauna in 2023 and some unpublished earlier records, together with new province records not included in the checklist ( Corley, 2015). Additional data include new data on larval host-plants within the country and second to fourth records of species for the country. Papers published in 2023 and part of 2024 that relate to the Portuguese Lepidoptera fauna are listed and briefly summarised. Finally, an Appendix lists the new species for Portugal separately, with numbers indicating their position in the checklist.
The Portuguese moth recording scheme, “Rede de Estações de Borboletas Noturnas”, launched in 2021, has made a significant contribution to knowledge of moth species distribution in Portugal. New province records from this source from 2023 are included in this paper.
Twenty species new for Portugal are listed below, of which two are new for the Iberian Peninsula. Four species are removed from the Portuguese list.
In Corley et al. (2023) the number of Lepidoptera species recognised from Portugal was 2775. With the current paper and other papers mentioned herein this total has risen to 2794.
Material and Methods
Most species were captured at light. For specimens not taken at light, the means of capture is given. Specimens of the species reported here for the first time for Portugal are retained in the collections of the original recorders, unless otherwise stated. However, many records are based only on photographic evidence. Original photos of several species new for Portugal are provided in this paper.
The order and nomenclature of families and species follows the Portuguese list ( Corley, 2015) and subsequent updates in this series (Corley et al. 2016, 2018a, 2018b, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023). The nomenclature of plant names follows the World Checklist of Vascular Plants database ( Govaerts, 2024).
The entry for species new for Portugal concludes with a summary of the known European distribution taken from Karsholt & Razowski (1996) and other papers relevant to each case, and available information on the larval host-plant, given in square brackets if the information comes from outside Portugal.

Recent literature
Bengtsson (2024) raises S. terrenella (Zeller, 1847) from synonymy with S. tributella (Zeller, 1847). Portuguese records of S. tributella all belong to the widespread S. terrenella. S. tributella appears to be confined to Sicily.
Corley et al. (2023) add eight species to the Portuguese Lepidoptera fauna and delete one.
Ferreira et al. (2024) publish information on barcodes of Portuguese moths from the InBIO Barcoding Initiative.
Gil et al. (2021) report Pseudopanthera macularia (Linnaeus, 1758) for Douro Litoral.
Gil & Grosso-Silva (2023) report two new species for Douro Litoral: Scythris sinensis (Felder & Rogenhofer, 1875) and Synanthedon conopiformis (Esper, 1782).
Grosso-Silva & Senra-Martins (2023) add Minho to the distribution of Yponomeuta evonymella (Linnaeus, 1758).
Nunes (2023) publishes further additions to the Lepidoptera of Lousada, adding two new species for Portugal, Stigmella regiella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855) and Enarmonia formosana (Scopoli, 1763), 13 new species for Douro Litoral and additional data on host-plants of a number of species. Although Zelleria oleastrella (Millière, 1864) was reported for the first time in the same province, this was not explicitly highlighted in that work.
Nunes et al. (2024) add Agonopterix cachritis (Staudinger, 1859) to the Portuguese fauna. The species was previously only known from Spain, where it may be extinct.
Pires & Marabuto (2024) add two new provinces (Estremadura and Beira Alta) to the distribution of Millieria dolosalis and provide an update on current knowledge of the species in Portugal. This work has brought a confusion of localities into focus. In that paper the first Portuguese record of the species by Mendes is stated to be from Beira Baixa, but in Corley (2015) the locality is said to be in Alto Alentejo. The place name in question, Portas do Ródão refers to two facing crags on opposite sides of the Rio Tejo, one in Beira Baixa and one in Alto Alentejo. There is no known evidence on which side Mendes collected M. dolosalis (and two other species) but as he was based at São Fiel, near Fundão some 60 km north of this locality, on the balance of probability he would have visited the north side, not the south. Furthermore, he could have travelled from Fundão to Vila Velha do Ródão and possibly beyond by train. We therefore propose that Mendes’ records from this locality are assumed to be from Beira Baixa.
Pires et al. (2024) record Gracillaria syringella (Fabricius, 1794) from Alto Alentejo, as a new species for the Iberian Peninsula, although there is an earlier published record from Spain ( Vives Moreno, 1991, p. 264 as G. microdactylella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)). The moth in Portugal was not collected but named from a photograph. According to Zdenek Lastuvka the figured moth is not Gracillaria syringella but appears to be Caloptilia loriolella (Frey, 1881). In the absence of a specimen, we treat both suggested names as unconfirmed.
Russell & Vane-Wright (2022) reverse the invalid lectotypification of Hipparchia hermione Linnaeus, with the result that the correct name for the Portuguese species is H. alcyone (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775).
Zlatkov & Huemer (2023) reinstate Eucosma subvittana (Staudinger, 1892) from synonymy with E. cana (Haworth, 1811). They mention probable records from Portugal based on barcodes in BOLD. They suggest that all records of E. cana from southern Europe are likely to belong to E. subvittana.
Appendix: Changes to the Portuguese fauna list
Species added to the Portuguese fauna listed in this and other papers are summarised here, each with a number indicating their placement in the checklist ( Corley, 2015). New genera for the Portuguese fauna show the author and year of publication of the genus.
Name changes resulting from changes at genus level or to new synonymy are given, with each species retaining its list number. In a case where a new name is provided for a previously misidentified species, the new species retains the number of the misidentified species. Thus, Scythris terrenella (Zeller, 1847) replaces Scythris tributella (Zeller, 1847) which was previously misidentified, but the species retains the number 0876 in the checklist.
