Abstract: This is to thank the outgoing editorial team and to welcome the new editorial team for Current Issues in Sport Science (CISS), the journal of the sport science organizations of Austria (ÖSG) and Switzerland (SGS). CISS focuses on current issues in our multi- and interdisciplinary field reflected by its sections: Biology & Medicine; Biomechanics & Informatics; Movement & Exercise Science; Pedagogy & History; Psychology & Philosophy; Public Health; Sociology & Economics; and Technology. We welcome articles that address timely topics, push the envelope, set the stage, and motivate the science in new and innovative topics.

Editorial

It is with great anticipation that I returned to the place where I spent my childhood to take on a new professional position. Shortly after starting, I was honored to be invited by the sport science organizations of Austria (ÖSG) and Switzerland (SGS) to take over the editorship of their Journal - Current Issues in Sport Science (CISS). I would like to thank the founding Editors Martin Kopp, University of Innsbruck, AUT, and Ernst-Joachim Hossner, University of Bern, CH for all that they have done in establishing the journal and outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Martin Kopp, for how helpful he was and still is in the editorial transition.

The rationale of CISS has been well described (Kopp, 2016). CISS is based on a concept – focusing in current issues in our multi- and interdisciplinary field – that I am very interested in cultivating as this Journal’s uniqueness in the sport science arena. This multi- and interdisciplinary nature of CISS is reflected in the sections. I would like to thank the outgoing section editors:

for their service in contributing to the first few years of CISS. I respect the importance of these sections and will be continuing them with a group of highly qualified international incoming section editors that join the continuing Psychology and Philosophy section editors:

I am also very pleased that Markus Tilp, University of Graz, AUT, has accepted the Co-Editor role and provides the institutional memory along with his expertise.

In addition, CISS is expanding with two new sections, which reflect areas that present current opportunities in the sport science arena. Public Health reflects the importance of sport and physical activity for all, as is reflected in the just released WHO guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behavior. Technology is ubiquitous in sport and physical activity in basic and applied research addressing theory, measurement, intervention, and dissemination. It is very exciting to welcome the section editors:

  1. Public Health, Mireille van Poppel, University of Graz, AUT

  2. Technology, Christine Pellegrini, University of South Carolina, USA

As this editorial group steps in, we are looking forward to taking CISS to the next level with a vision of increasing the journal’s impact. We envision continuing Target articles, inviting special CISS sections on relevant and timely issues, and welcome consensus statements, guidelines, and research agendas in addition to original research articles.

One of the first significant changes is that we have been able to remove the author fees and transition to Diamond Open Access. This means no author costs or reader costs. We feel this is important in the times of predatory journals, author fees that may be prohibitive for students, junior scientists and unfunded researchers, and in the spirit of open science. We also think that research budgets should be spent on research costs advancing our science, not on publication fees.

We also acknowledge and thank the University of Innsbruck publisher for getting CISS off the ground. We have now successfully transferred CISS to Berner Open Publishing which has an updated (user friendly) interface and allows us not only to publish articles as PDFs but also HTM which is vital for the search engines to find our publications and thus provide us substantially more visibility.

But most important in this equation is you:

We welcome articles that address timely topics, push the envelope, set the stage, and motivate the science in new and innovative topics. We look forward to working with you.
