The Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine (Iberoam J Med), founded in 2019, has swiftly established itself as a vital contributor to the dissemination of high-quality medical research. In just a few years, it has gained recognition and visibility in prestigious academic platforms, becoming a trusted source for healthcare professionals and researchers in the Ibero-American region and beyond. Indexed in SciELO, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Latindex, and Redalyc, IJM stands as a testament to the power of open access publishing in advancing medical science.

Iberoam J Med journey began with a mission to bridge gaps in medical knowledge and foster collaboration across the Ibero-American region. Its first volume, published in 2019, laid the foundation for what has become a reputable forum for discussing diverse medical topics. The journal’s scope encompasses clinical medicine, public health, biomedical sciences, and interdisciplinary research, reflecting the complexity and breadth of modern healthcare challenges. Since its inception, the journal has attracted significant attention from the scientific community. By the end of 2024, it had received 518 article submissions, of which 228 were accepted for publication. This acceptance rate of 44.01% underscores Iberoam J Med rigorous peer-review process and commitment to publishing only high-quality research. Such selectivity ensures that readers can trust the validity and relevance of the studies featured in the journal.

One of the pivotal achievements of Iberoam J Med is its inclusion in renowned indexing platforms such as SciELO, which enhances the visibility and accessibility of Iberoam J Med articles. This indexing reflects Iberoam J Med compliance with stringent academic standards and its contribution to scientific advancement in Latin America and the Caribbean. Similarly, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) highlights Iberoam J Med commitment to open access principles, ensuring its research reaches a global audience and fosters knowledge sharing. Latindex underscores Iberoam J Med adherence to editorial quality and transparency, essential for building trust among researchers and institutions, while Redalyc positions Iberoam J Med within a network of academic journals dedicated to open dissemination, further solidifying its reputation in the scientific community.

The adoption of an open access model has been instrumental in Iberoam J Med success. By eliminating subscription fees, the journal democratizes access to cutting-edge research, enabling healthcare practitioners, academics, and policymakers to stay informed about the latest developments. This model is particularly impactful in regions where financial constraints often limit access to scholarly publications. Moreover, open access enhances the citation potential of articles, increasing their impact and fostering wider dissemination of scientific findings. For IJM, this approach aligns with its mission to advance medical science and improve healthcare outcomes across the Ibero-American region and beyond.

From groundbreaking clinical trials and innovative treatment modalities to public health strategies and biomedical advancements, the journal serves as a platform for addressing pressing healthcare challenges. It also welcomes interdisciplinary studies that explore the intersection of medicine with fields such as technology, sociology, and economics, reflecting the interconnected nature of modern healthcare.

Despite its achievements, Iberoam J Med faces challenges common to many academic journals. Securing sustainable funding for open access publishing is a persistent concern, as is maintaining a steady flow of high-quality submissions. Additionally, the journal must navigate the competitive landscape of academic publishing, where attracting top-tier research can be challenging. Looking ahead, Iberoam J Med aims to expand its reach and influence by enhancing its digital presence, leveraging advanced tools to improve accessibility and discoverability, strengthening international collaborations, and promoting early-career researchers by providing platforms for young scientists to share their work. Furthermore, the journal is committed to highlighting research that addresses the unique healthcare challenges faced by the Ibero-American region.
