<p> Con motivo de los 45 años de la creación del Grupo de Polímeros de la ULA queremos presentar esta semblanza de su fundador el Profesor Franco M. Rabagliati Canessa. Franco Rabagliati nació en Valparaíso - Chile, es el mayor de tres hermanos, buen hijo y hermano, gran esposo, padre de familia, maravilloso <italic>nonno</italic> y muy buen amigo de sus amigos. </p>
<p> Su vida la ha dedicado por completo a su familia, su amada Sylvita y sus queridos hijos: María Alejandra, Ricardo Miguel e Isabel Margarita, y a la Universidad en el área de Investigación y Docencia. </p>
<p> Fanático de los deportes: sus pasiones el fútbol y el tenis. Sus equipos favoritos el Audax Italiano y la UC. Le encanta, disfrutar de sus cultivos ya sea en el patio de la casa o en la terraza del departamento. </p>
<p> Como buen descendiente de padres italianos, ama la cocina, en especial disfrutar de una buena mesa con amigos y familiares. Su especialidad pastas (pansotti en sala de nueces), pizzas, focaccia, la insuperable Pascualina, Torta de Arroz y obviamente deliciosos asados.</p>
<p> Trotamundo, ha viajados por muchas ciudades, investigando, participando en Congresos y/u otras actividades científicas, contactando colegas y Centros Científicos, además de compartir, particularmente, experiencias en Chile y Venezuela, asi como también en Austria, Italia, Argentina, Brasil, Japón, Australia, China, Bélgica, Alemania, España y Rusia, no solamente participando de congresos internacionales dando conferencias y comunicando los resultados de sus investigaciones, sino también visitando universidades, laboratorios y bibliotecas. </p>
<p> Él ha inspirado a innumerables estudiantes a seguir en el mundo de la investigación, sus alumnos han sido su motivación, su motor, para continuar en su camino de la docencia al entregarles, no solo lo mejor de sus conocimientos sino también inculcarles invaluables valores humanos, como honestidad, sensibilidad, gratitud, prudencia, respeto y responsabilidad, cualidades que son inherentes a su personalidad y que le hicieron ganar el respeto y la admiración de sus discípulos y colegas. </p>
<p> María Alejandra, su hija, recuerda haberlo acompañado cuando niña a una Exposición de Investigación organizada por CONICYT en un colegio de Mérida, y oírlo decir que para él, desde ahí partía la cuna de los científicos del futuro. </p>
<p> Su inquietud por conocer más sobre el origen y trascendencia de los hechos naturales y experimentales existentes en la química, los que era capaz de apreciar en su diario vivir, llevaron al Profesor Franco M. Rabagliati a estudiar Licenciatura en Química en Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, en Santiago, Chile. El 27 de Marzo de 1957 presentó su Tesis "<italic>Plastificantes. Preparación de Dibutil Ftalato</italic>"<sup>
<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref1">1</xref>
</sup>, la cual fue aprobada con nota máxima y con dos votos de distinción del jurado, para graduarse como Licenciado en Ciencias Químicas e Industriales. </p>
<p> Luego de ello, se trasladó a Italia, en donde comenzó su fructífera labor de investigación, en el Instituto Superiore di Sanitá en Roma, allí publicó sus dos primeros artículos<sup>
<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref2">2</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref3">3</xref>
</sup> en el área de síntesis orgánica. También realizó una estancia en el Instituto di Chimica Industriale (Politecnico di Milano), en el Departamento dirigido por el Professor Giulio Natta, donde trabajó con Prof. Mario Pegoraro, y Prof. A. Pagani en el Laboratorio Pruebas a Materiales Plásticos y siguió los cursos “Polímeros” y “Tecnología de los Materiales Plásticos”. </p>
<p> A finales de 1959 volvió a Santiago de Chile combinando su trabajo en la Universidad de Chile y la empresa "Pinturas FORC” donde estuvo hasta Diciembre 1961, para luego dedicarse enteramente a la labor universitaria. </p>
<p> En octubre 1964 comenzó una importante etapa de su formación, iniciando sus estudios doctorales en Inglaterra trabajando con el Prof. Malcom Bruce en Victoria University of Manchester, (Manchester, Inglaterra) concluyendo en Noviembre de 1966 cuando obtuvo el Grado de Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D., con la Tesis "<italic>Studies of some organozinc alkoxides and of the Polymerization of epoxides with these and related systems</italic>”, con lo que agregó tres nuevas publicaciones, incluida su Tesis<sup>
<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref4">4</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref5">5</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref6">6</xref>
</sup>. </p>
<p> Luego regresó a Chile, Universidad de Chile, Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas (FCFM), docencia e investígación, donde inició un Grupo de Investigación en Polímeros. Dirigió varias Memorias de Grado en su especialidad. Posteriormente, con otros colegas de FCFM-U.Ch, crearon el Instituto Tecnológico de Chile, INTEC-CORFO, donde tuvo la responsabilidad de crear y dirigir el Grupo de Polímeros y Plásticos. Manteniendo, a tiempo parcial, su docencia en la Universidad de Chile, dictando el primer curso de Química de Polímeros en el Programa de Doctorado en Ingeniería Química.</p>
<p> En julio de 1973 se trasladó junto a su esposa y sus 3 pequeños hijos a Mérida, Venezuela, contratado por la Universidad de Los Andes, lugar donde fundó el Grupo de Polímeros. Ese mismo año inició el primer curso de polímeros y comenzó a organizar el laboratorio de investigación con financiamiento del CDCH-ULA, ULA-BID y FONINVES. En 1976 concluyó la dirección de la primera Tesis de Grado y la Tutoría al primer Trabajo de Ascenso. A partir de ese año se inició la salida de jóvenes profesionales formados en el laboratorio para hacer estudios de 4º nivel en universidades internacionales de reconocido prestigio, para que a su regreso iniciaran nuevas líneas de investigación o reforzaran las ya existentes. En 1979 el Grupo de Polímeros organizó el Primer Coloquio Nacional de Polímeros, evento que desde entonces se ha repetido regularmente cada dos años. Posteriormente, a partir de 1988, dio origen a los Simposios Latinoamericanos e Iberoamericanos de Polímeros. </p>
<p> En 1986, el Profesor Rabagliati, quien para entonces había sido coordinador, líder y principal maestro del Grupo, retorna a Chile su país de origen, dejando un Grupo muy bien formado y con varias líneas de investigación activas. Pese a su partida, el Dr. Rabagliati se mantuvo cooperando con el Grupo que formó en Mérida-Venezuela en varias de sus líneas de investigación, figurando en la plantilla de los profesores de postgrado del Grupo. </p>
<p> Durante su estadía en Mérida, el Profesor Rabagliati dirigió 12 Trabajos de Grado de licenciatura y 4 trabajos de ascenso de profesores del Departamento de Química y publicó 12 artículos científicos [7-18]. Y como producto de la colaboración con el Grupo que fundó, luego de su partida se publicaron de forma conjunta otros nueve artículos más<sup>
<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref19">19</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref20">20</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref21">21</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref23">23</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref24">24</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref25">25</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref26">26</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref28">28</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="redalyc_93361139001_ref30">30</xref>
</sup>. </p>
<p> Ya de regreso en Chile y con una larga y exitosa trayectoria, soportada por una labor docente impecable, un  apreciable número de estudiantes graduados, sigue generando nuevas publicaciones en conjunto con sus estudiantes y colegas, para un total de cerca de 100, considerando las que actualmente han sido enviadas, y están siendo evaluadas en revistas de prestigio internacional. También un gran número de presentaciones científicas, conferencias invitadas en congresos nacionales e internacionales y cursos de alto nivel, en donde destacan su preparación, dedicación, seriedad y honestidad tanto para el quehacer como para quienes reciben el aporte de su trabajo. El profesor señala que no hay sorpresas, sino que todo es fruto del esfuerzo y preparación : “<italic>No se trata de dar sorpresas sino aportar con los conocimientos, experiencia y experticias, que resultan de nuestra trayectoria entregadas tanto al país, la universidad y a estudiantes de pre y post-grado. Para lo cual aportamos con nuestra dedicación y entusiasmo en el cumplimiento de nuestros compromisos</italic>”.</p>
<p> Franco Rabagliati siempre se destacó en lo profesional y humano, entregando sus conocimientos y formando a quienes quisieran hacer de la ciencia parte de su vida. Quienes lo hemos conocido y tenido el honor de trabajar y aprender de él, como alumnos o colegas, no podemos menos que considerarlo como un verdadero maestro, no solo en la ciencia sino también como ser humano. </p>
<p> Hoy a sus 84 años, se acaba de jubilar de su vida laboral, pero sin duda por siempre se mantendrá unido a las ciencias porque es un pilar fundamental en su vida. </p>
<p> Viudo, con 3 hijos y 6 nietos ha llevado una vida ejemplar en cada uno de los ámbitos en que se ha desarrollado, su corazón noble y su entrega desinteresada por el quehacer científico le ha significado ser reconocido por quienes han tenido la oportunidad de compartir con él y aprender de su nobleza dentro del saber en el mundo de las ciencias. </p>
