SPECIAL SECTION: The Estación Regional del Noroeste: 50 years of UNAM presence in northwestern Mexico

In 2024, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Estación Regional del Noroeste (ERNO) of the Instituto de Geología of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The ERNO was founded in 1974 in Hermosillo, Sonora, within the framework of UNAM's decentralization policy, with the mission of promoting studies on the geology of northwestern Mexico.

The aim is to enrich this section with articles that deal with the different lines of research that are carried out at the ERNO and in collaboration with other universities, both national and international, which have been essential in the advancement of scientific knowledge not only in Sonora but in the Northwest of Mexico.

The section will include topics in:

regional geology and tectonics,

metallogenesis,

ore deposits,

stratigraphy,

paleontology,

geochronology,

environmental biogeochemistry,

integrative ecology,

geomorphology and

surface dynamics.

Deadline for receiving the original submission: May 31th 2025.

Follow the guidelines for authors in order to prepare your manuscript.

Invited Section: Geosciences and Society

In this special section, invited scientific papers selected by the editorial committee will be published, aimed at a general audience. These papers, written by experts in various fields of Earth Sciences, will address aspects of geosciences with societal impact and provide specialized information to present lines of evidence and debunk myths and false beliefs. The goal is to help appreciate how geosciences contribute to improving society.

Peer Review

Every manuscript is reviewed by two independent referees selected by the editors, using a single-blind review. Authors can submit the names and addresses of appropriate reviewers.

The decision concerning acceptance or rejection of a manuscript will be made by the editors, and will depend on the evaluation by the referees.

After the evaluation of the manuscript, it could be rejected or returned to the author with the suggestions of the referees.

The revised manuscript must be returned to the editor with an accompanying letter specifying the changes made in response to those suggestions; changes to the manuscript must be marked with a different text color.

The editor evaluates the corrected manuscript and decides if a new external revision is required.

The editor decides to accept the manuscript or return it to the authors for additional corrections.

In some cases, the authors are invited to resubmit a rejected manuscript.
