e instrucciones para los autores
Biomédica es
la revista científica del Instituto Nacional de Salud de Colombia. Su fin
primordial es la difusión de trabajos originales que contribuyan a ampliar los conocimientos
en biomedicina.
Política
editorial de la revista
Biomédica acepta
y se acoge a los lineamientos establecidos por el International Committee
of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)
(www.icmje.org), por Equator Network (http://www.equator-network.org/)
y por el Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
(http://publicationethics.org/) para garantizar la calidad de las publicaciones
científicas, su transparencia, integridad y debida salvaguarda de los
principios éticos que rigen la investigación biomédica.
La
política de reconocimiento de autoría de la revista Biomédica se ciñe a
la orientación del ICMJE. Este Comité señala que
“El
crédito de autoría debe basarse solamente en:
(1)
contribuciones sustanciales a la concepción y el diseño del manuscrito, o a la
adquisición, análisis e interpretación de los datos;
(2)
la redacción del manuscrito o la revisión crítica de contenido intelectual
importante;
(3)
la aprobación final de la versión que se publicará, y
(4)
la asunción de la responsabilidad frente a todos los aspectos del manuscrito,
para garantizar que los asuntos relativos a la exactitud o integridad de
cualquier parte del mismo sean apropiadamente investigados y resueltos.
Para
que a alguien se le reconozca como autor, debe satisfacer las cuatro condiciones
mencionadas. La adquisición de fondos, la recolección de datos o la supervisión
general del grupo de investigación por sí mismos, no justifican la autoría”.
La
revista Biomédica no
acepta la inclusión o el retiro de autores después de haberse iniciado el
proceso editorial de los manuscritos. En casos excepcionales en que ello se
permita, es obligatorio obtener el consentimiento por escrito de los autores
cuyos nombres vayan a ser eliminados del manuscrito o agregados a él. Además,
se debe enviar una declaración firmada haciendo constar que todos los autores
reúnen los criterios de autoría y que no existen otros autores que, reuniendo
los criterios, hayan sido omitidos, y volver a mencionar en detalle la
contribución de cada persona a la investigación y al manuscrito.
Registro
de ensayos clínicos
Biomédica apoya
las políticas de registro de ensayos clínicos de la Organización Mundial de la
Salud y del International
Commitee of Medical Journal
Editors. Por consiguiente, solamente
aceptará para publicación los manuscritos de investigaciones clínicas que hayan
recibido un número de identificación en uno de los registros de ensayos
clínicos validados por los criterios establecidos por las instituciones antes
mencionadas. El número de identificación y el sitio de registro se deben
incluir al final del resumen del manuscrito.
Derechos
de autor
Ninguna
publicación, nacional o extranjera, puede reproducir ni traducir los artículos
ni sus resúmenes, sin previa autorización escrita del Comité Editorial de la
revista Biomédica.
Declaración
de privacidad
Los
nombres y las direcciones de correo electrónico suministradas a la revista se
utilizarán exclusivamente para los propósitos declarados y no se pondrán a
disposición de ninguna otra persona o institución.
Proceso editorial
Todo material propuesto para
publicación en la revista será revisado inicialmente por el Comité Editorial y
enviado luego para evaluación externa a evaluadores o pares científicos. Para
facilitar este paso, junto con el manuscrito, los autores deben enviar a través
del sistema en línea, un archivo complementario que contenga el nombre, la
afiliación y el correo electrónico de cuatro posibles evaluadores nacionales y
cuatro internacionales. Los nombres de los evaluadores sugeridos no deben
incluirse dentro del manuscrito.
Una
vez que el autor reciba los comentarios de los evaluadores, debe proceder a
contestarlos punto por punto y a incorporar las modificaciones correspondientes
en el texto, en un plazo de dos semanas. Si en el transcurso de las cuatro
semanas siguientes, Biomédica no
ha recibido la respuesta de los autores, el Comité Editorial retirará el
manuscrito.
Una
vez aceptado el manuscrito para publicación, el Comité Editorial no aceptará
modificaciones sobre su contenido y se solicitará enviar una declaración de
cesión a la revista de los derechos de reproducción, la cual debe ser firmada
por todos los autores. Además, los autores deben hacer revisar la calidad del
inglés del manuscrito o del resumen, por parte de un experto en el idioma, y enviar
la certificación a la revista en un plazo menor a dos semanas.
La
revista Biomédica se
reserva el derecho de aceptar o rechazar los manuscritos sometidos para
publicación, y hará sugerencias que tiendan a mejorar su presentación y a
garantizar la integridad de la publicación.
Los
manuscritos originales aceptados para publicación, se mantendrán en los
archivos de la revista durante mínimo un año a partir de la fecha de
publicación.
Después
de la edición y la corrección de estilo, los autores recibirán las galeradas
del artículo, las cuales deben ser cuidadosamente revisadas y devueltas al
editor en un término máximo de 48 horas.
Una
vez realizada la publicación de la revista, el autor principal recibirá, libre
de costo, dos ejemplares de la revista.
La
revista Biomédica
es de acceso libre e incluye metadatos de citación para todas las referencias
de los artículos publicados y las deposita en CrossRef (http://www.crossref.org/).
Información
general sobre los manuscritos
Biomédica publica
trabajos científicos, escritos en español o en inglés, en las siguientes
categorías.
Artículo
original: trabajo inédito derivado de una
investigación biomédica que aporta información nueva sobre aspectos específicos
y contribuye de manera relevante al conocimiento científico.
Comunicación
breve: es el informe de resultados
parciales o finales de una investigación, cuya divulgación rápida sea de gran
importancia.
Nota
técnica: describe en detalle una técnica
de laboratorio novedosa o modificaciones de una técnica ya establecida,
enfatizando las ventajas que tiene el procedimiento o la innovación
desarrollados.
Ensayo: es
un manuscrito filosófico, literario o científico que presenta la opinión
sustentada del autor sobre un tema específico o de actualidad.
Comentario: manuscrito
sobre un artículo publicado en la revista.
Reseña
histórica: es un manuscrito que destaca
personajes o sucesos y su contribución al desarrollo de las ciencias biomédicas
o de las políticas en salud.
Revisión
de tema: presenta el estado actual del
conocimiento sobre un tema; puede ser de dos tipos:
1)
solicitada directamente por el Comité Editorial a personas expertas en el tema,
2)
presentada por profesionales interesados en un tema en particular. En este
caso, se debe enviar inicialmente al Comité Editorial la propuesta en la que se
indique por qué el tema escogido es pertinente para los lectores de Biomédica, así como una
breve descripción del contenido, las referencias clave, las publicaciones de
los autores sobre el tema que serán incluidas (requisito obligatorio), los
datos inéditos de los autores que se incluirán en la revisión (requisito
obligatorio), la probable extensión del documento y el número aproximado de
ilustraciones.
En
ambas casos, los autores deben estructurar la revisión de la siguiente manera:
·
incluir un resumen con énfasis
en el significado de los hallazgos recientes;
·
una introducción al tema,
señalando hitos pasados y desarrollos presentes;
·
encabezamientos en el texto,
con el objeto de hacer más provechosa su lectura;
·
la revisión debe incluir un
análisis crítico de la bibliografía y los datos propios de los autores;
·
el desarrollo del tema queda a
discreción del autor, pero se aconseja que incluya tablas, esquemas y figuras,
que hagan ágil el texto y ofrezcan una comprensión más rápida de su contenido.
En caso de usar figuras tomadas total o parcialmente de otras publicaciones,
los autores deben adjuntar el permiso de la casa editorial que ostente los
derechos de autor para su reproducción en Biomédica.
Imágenes
en biomedicina: es un trabajo ilustrado con
fotografías que muestran y explican de manera didáctica un concepto, una
estructura, una enfermedad o un diagnóstico biomédico. Debe incluir un
comentario corto que resalte la importancia del tema ilustrado.
Haga
usted el diagnóstico: pretende retar la
capacidad diagnóstica de los lectores, utilizando ilustraciones o fotografías
de casos clínicos o de hallazgos microscópicos. Consta de dos partes, la
presentación clínica y los hallazgos correspondientes, y el diagnóstico
correcto; este último aparece en una página aparte y debe acompañarse de un
comentario actualizado sobre la entidad que se pretende ilustrar.
Presentación
de casos: son ejemplos de casos clínicos
que destacan alguna particularidad o señalan un hallazgo especial de la
enfermedad, con una revisión breve de las publicaciones pertinentes.
Cartas
al editor: los lectores pueden solicitar aclaraciones
o presentar comentarios sobre el material publicado en la revista. La decisión
sobre la publicación de las cartas recibidas queda a discreción del Comité
Editorial.
Comentarios
bibliográficos: son escritos críticos breves
sobre libros de salud o de biomedicina.
Preparación del manuscrito
Los autores deben ceñirse a las indicaciones del International
Committee of Medical Journal Editors, que se encuentran publicadas
como Recommendations
for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in
Medical Journals (Updated
December 2013) (http://icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf).
El
manuscrito debe incluir las siguientes secciones.
Hoja
de presentación: esta sección debe incluir
·
título (máximo 165 caracteres),
·
título corto para los
encabezamientos de las páginas (máximo 50 caracteres),
·
título en inglés (máximo 165
caracteres),
·
un párrafo con los nombres
completos de los autores únicamente con el primer apellido,
·
la afiliación institucional
integrada por grupo, institución, ciudad y país. La afiliación institucional se
relaciona con los autores con números en superíndice y en ella se deben omitir
cargos y títulos académicos,
·
datos de correspondencia:
nombre del autor responsable, dirección completa, número telefónico y de fax, y
dirección electrónica, y
·
párrafo donde los autores
declaren cuál fue el aporte al documento de cada uno de ellos.
Resúmenes: el
trabajo debe incluir un resumen estructurado en español e inglés, con los
subtítulos introducción, objetivo, materiales y métodos, resultados y
conclusión. Los resúmenes no deben exceder las 250 palabras. No se permite el
uso de referencias ni se recomienda la inclusión de siglas o acrónimos.
Palabras
clave: se requieren de 6 a 10 palabras clave
en cada idioma; consulte los Descriptores en Ciencias de la Salud (DeCS) del índice de la Literatura Latinoamericana y del
Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS) en http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepagee.htm;
para verificar las de inglés, consulte los Medical Subject Headings(MeSH) del Index Medicus en
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.htm.
Texto: todo
el manuscrito, incluso la página del título, los resúmenes, las referencias,
las leyendas de figuras y cuadros, debe estar escrito en letra Arial de 12
puntos de tamaño a doble espacio y alineado a la izquierda, sin dejar espacios
extras entre párrafos; se debe dejar un solo espacio después del punto y
seguido o del punto y aparte.
Los
cuadros se deben configurar en letra Arial de 10 puntos de tamaño a espacio
sencillo.
Se
debe usar letra bastardilla o cursiva para los términos científicos, sin
subrayarlos.
Los
números decimales en español deben separarse de los números enteros por comas,
no por puntos.
Formato
electrónico: el manuscrito se debe enviar en
Word, preferiblemente en la versión 97-2003. Además de ser adjuntas al
documento de Word, las figuras se deben enviar preferentemente como fichero
complementario en formato tiff (Tagged Image File Format) de 300 dpi (dots per inch).
Las gráficas elaboradas en PowerPoint
o Word son de baja resolución, por lo tanto, no se deben
incluir este tipo de imágenes en formato electrónico. Las ilustraciones se
imprimen en una columna (75 mm) o en dos columnas (153 mm); por consiguiente,
se deben enviar las ilustraciones del tamaño en que van a quedar impresas. Si las
ilustraciones son en color y se remiten en formato electrónico, se deben enviar
en archivos CMYK en formato tiff (Tagged Image File Format) de alta resolución. Si la imagen no
tiene texto incluido, la resolución óptima para los archivos CMYK es de 300 dpi;
si incluye texto, la resolución recomendada es de 600 dpi y, si son de blanco y
negro, de 1.200 dpi. La fuente preferida para las gráficas es Helvética. Si sus
archivos son de Macintosh, debe convertirlos a uno de los formatos mencionados.
Se requiere una lista completa de los archivos enviados, que incluya los
programas cuyo formato se utilizó.
Agradecimientos: cuando
en esta sección se nombren personas, los autores deben certificar que ellos
tienen conocimiento y están de acuerdo con aparecer en los agradecimientos.
Esto no es necesario cuando se nombran entidades.
Conflicto
de intereses y financiación: los autores deben
incluir, antes de las referencias del manuscrito, un párrafo en el que expresen
si existen conflictos de intereses o si no los hay. Además, debe presentarse
otro párrafo que incluya la fuente de financiación de la investigación
adelantada.
Biomédica acoge
las recomendaciones del ICMJE y adopta el formato de declaración de potenciales
conflictos de intereses, el cual debe ser diligenciado individualmente por cada
uno de los autores del manuscrito y enviado junto con la carta de remisión. El
formulario electrónico está disponible en http://www.icmje.org/conflicts-of-interest/
Referencias
bibliográficas: es indispensable observar
estrictamente las indicaciones de los requisitos uniformes para manuscritos del
área biomédica. Se le asigna un número a cada referencia citada del texto, así
como a los cuadros y a las figuras, en orden ascendente. Los números de las
referencias se anotan entre paréntesis y no como superíndice.
Las
comunicaciones personales, los datos sin publicar, los manuscritos en
preparación o sometidos para publicación y los resúmenes de trabajos presentados
en congresos, se deben citar entre paréntesis en el cuerpo del manuscrito y no
en la sección de referencias.
La
abreviatura exacta de la revista citada se debe consultar en la lista de
publicaciones periódicas del Index Medicus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html);
si la revista no aparece, se escribe el título completo de la revista. Solo se
deben transcribir los seis primeros autores del artículo, seguidos de et al. Se recomienda
la inclusión de referencias nacionales y latinoamericanas, para lo cual se
puede consultar Lilacs, Publindex, Latindex, Redalyc, Sibra y otras fuentes bibliográficas pertinentes.
En
caso de dudas sobre la forma correcta de citar una referencia (artículo
científico, libro, tesis, página de internet, etc.), se sugiere consultar la
página http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html,
en la cual se encuentran ejemplos de todos y cada uno de los posibles casos.
A

Cuadros
y figuras: los cuadros se elaboran usando
el formato de Word; abstenerse de preparar archivos en columnas o tabulados en
el texto mismo del manuscrito.
En
las preparaciones de microscopio, se deben mencionar la coloración y el aumento
según el objetivo utilizado, sin incluir el valor del ocular.
Cuando
se utilicen cuadros o figuras que ya hayan sido publicados, se requiere enviar la
autorización de la casa editorial que ostenta los derechos de reproducción.
Remisión
del manuscrito
El
manuscrito debe ser remitido a través del sistema en línea disponible en el
enlace de información para autores en http://www.revistabiomedica.org/.
Sin
embargo, se debe enviar la carta impresa de remisión firmada en original por
todos los autores, en la que conste que todos conocen y están de acuerdo con su
contenido, y que el manuscrito no ha sido publicado anteriormente ni se ha
sometido a publicación simultánea en otra revista, a la oficina de la revista
ubicada en la siguiente dirección:

Los

proceso de revisión editorial del manuscrito.
Al
someter un manuscrito para publicación en Biomédica, los autores aceptan con su firma,
explícita o implícitamente, que:
Como
parte del proceso de envío, los autores/as están obligados a comprobar que su envío
cumpla todos los elementos que se muestran a continuación. Se devolverán a los
autores/as aquellos envíos que no cumplan estas directrices.
Solo

Las referencias se numeran según orden de aparición en el texto.
Se ordenan secuencialmente y en el formato adecuado, tal y como lo indican las
normas de Biomédica en las instrucciones a los autores (http://www.icmje.org/index.html)
Cuando se citan referencias en los cuadros, éstas deben seguir el orden con el
que se venía usando en el texto.
10.
Abreviaturas y siglas:
Se
anotan entre paréntesis después de la primera vez que aparezcan, en forma
completa y en el idioma original, los términos que se abrevian. Debe evitarse
el uso y la creación de siglas que no sean universalmente reconocidas.
11.
Nomenclatura:
Los
nombres taxonómicos de género y especie están escritos en letra cursiva.
Los
nombres de microorganismos se escriben completos la primera vez que se citan,
incluso en el título y en el resumen; después, se usa solamente la inicial del
género y el nombre completo de la especie.
12.
Consideraciones generales:
Se
envió carta impresa firmada por todos los autores o, en caso de autores
radicados en el extranjero, una carta de remisión firmada y escaneada desde sus
correos electrónicos personales.
Se
incluyó el formato de declaración de conflicto de interés diligenciado por cada
uno de los autores.
Se
obtuvo autorización del Comité de Ética para la experimentación en humanos o
animales, la cual debe incluirse al final de la sección de Materiales y
métodos.
Se
incluyeron el sitio y el número de registro del ensayo clínico, para la
intervención y experimentación
en humanos.
Los
autores certifican al Comité Editorial que las personas mencionadas en los
agradecimientos tienen conocimiento
de dicha mención y están de acuerdo con aparecer en ellos.
Todos
los manuscritos incluyen una declaración sobre la fuente de financiación.
13.
Se envían los nombres de los cuatro
evaluadores nacionales y los cuatro internacionales, con sus respectivos datos
(nombre, afiliación institucional y correo electrónico). No incluir evaluadores
que tengan la misma afiliación institucional de los autores.

Instructions to authors
Scope and policy
Biomédica is the quarterly journal of
the Instituto Nacional
de Salud of Colombia [Colombia’s National
Institute of Health]. Its main purpose is to publish the results of original
research that may contribute to expand knowledge in biomedicine.
Editorial policy
Biomédica accepts and subscribes the
guidelines established by the International Committee of Medical Journal
Editors (ICMJE) (www.icmje.org), by the Equator Network (http://www.equator-network.org/)
and by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
(http://publicationethics.org/) in order to guarantee the quality of scientific
publications, their transparency, integrity and full compliance with the
ethical principles applicable to biomedical research.
Biomédica’s policy on authorship
adheres to the ICMJE guidelines, which state in this regard that:
“Authorship should be based solely on the
following:
1) Substantial contributions to the conception or
design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for
the work;
2) drafting the work or
revising it critically for important intellectual content;
3) final approval of the

4) responsibility for all
aspects of the manuscript to ensure that matters concerning accuracy and completeness
of any of its sections have been appropriately investigated and solved.
All authors should meet these four conditions. Fund
raising, data collection or general supervision of the research group do not
justify authorship.”
Biomédica will not accept the inclusion or withdrawal of any author from the original
list once the manuscript has started the editorial process. In exceptional,
applicable cases, it will be mandatory to obtain written consent of the
author(s) whose name(s) are to be removed from or
added to the manuscript. Besides, written consent should be
sent stating that all authors meet authorship criteria, and that there
are no other authors who meet these criteria and are not mentioned. The
document should also describe in detail the contribution of each participant to
the research work and to the article.
Clinical trials registration
Biomédica subscribes the policies of
the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical
Journals Editors (ICMJE) regarding clinical trials registration. Therefore, it
will accept for publication only those manuscripts on clinical research
exhibiting the identification number from one of the clinical trial registries
validated according to the criteria established by WHO and the ICMJE. The
identification number and place of registry should be
mentioned after the Abstract.
Copyright notice
No national or foreign publication may reproduce or
translate articles or abstracts from Biomédica without
previous written authorization by the Editorial Board.
Privacy statement
The names and e-mail addresses provided to Biomédica
will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this
journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other
party.
Editorial
process
All manuscripts
submitted for publication to Biomédica will be reviewed by the Editorial Board and sent for peer review to
at least two experts. To facilitate this process, authors must suggest and
send via the journal on-line platform the names, institutional affiliation and
e-mail addresses of four national and four international reviewers whose names
should not be included in the manuscript.
Once the authors receive the reviewers’ comments,
they must address each comment, in addition to incorporating the corresponding
modifications in the text. The authors must reply to the reviewer comments
within two weeks after receiving them; if Biomédica has
not received the authors’ reply during the following four weeks, the paper will be withdrawn.
Once the paper has been accepted
for publication, the Editorial Board will not accept modifications in its
content, and it will request a copyright transfer statement signed by all
authors. Additionally, authors should certify the quality of the English
language in the manuscript or in the abstract on a document signed by an expert
and sent to the journal before two weeks.
The original manuscripts of articles accepted to be published will remain in the journal files
for a minimum of one year after publication. Once the paper has
been accepted for publication, and after editing and style correction,
authors will receive the galley proofs, which must be carefully reviewed and
returned to the editors within 48 hours after receipt by the authors.
Once the paper has been published,
the corresponding author will receive two free copies of the journal issue.
Biomédica is an open access journal
and it includes citation metadata for all references in published articles, all
of which are deposited in CrossRef
(http://www.crossref.org/).
General information on manuscripts
Biomédica will publish scientific
papers written in Spanish or English, in the following categories:
Original articles: Unpublished manuscripts resulting from biomedical research which present
new information about specific aspects and provides a relevant contribution to
scientific knowledge.
Short communication: Report of partial or final results of research whose rapid disclosure is
of great importance.
Technical note: Detailed description of a new laboratory technique or of modifications
done to an established technique, emphasizing the advantages that the process
has, or the importance of the innovation developed.
Essay: A philosophical, literary, or scientific manuscript that presents an author’s documented opinion about a specific topic or a
topic of current interest.
Commentary: A manuscript about an article published in the journal.
History: A manuscript that places emphasis on historical personalities or facts,
and their contributions to the development of biomedical sciences or health
policies.
Topic review: the current state of the art on a specific topic; it includes two
categories:
1) Requested by the Editorial Board to experts on a
topic.
2) Presented by professionals interested in a
particular topic. For this option, authors must send a
proposal indicating why the topic selected is relevant to the readers of Biomédica including a brief description,
some key references, publications by the authors on the topic that are to be
cited (mandatory), unpublished data by the authors that are to be included
(mandatory), the probable size of the manuscript and the approximate number of
illustrations.
In both categories, authors should include the
following elements:

An abstract
with emphasis on the significance - of recent findings;
·
a pointed
introduction to the topic showing past - landmarks and present developments;
·
appropriate
subtitles to facilitate a better understanding of the manuscript;
·
the development of the topic
is left to the - discretion of the authors, but they are advised to include
tables, graphics and figures to provide a clearer understanding of the text. In
case figures are taken partially or totally from other
publications, authors must attach the permission from the copyright holder for
their reproduction in Biomédica.
Images in biomedicine: An illustrated paper with photographs demonstrating and explaining a
concept, a structure, a disease or a biomedical diagnosis. It must include a
short commentary emphasizing the importance of the illustrated topic.
Make your own diagnosis: The purpose of papers presented in this category is to challenge the
diagnostic ability of readers, using illustrations or photographs of clinical
data, or microscopic findings. It has two parts, the clinical presentation and
the corresponding findings in the first part, and the correct diagnosis in the
second part. The latter should appear on a separate page and with an updated
comment on the disease it highlights.
Case presentation: Clinical cases with peculiar presentations or special features of
diagnostic value and a brief review of the relevant literature.
Letters to the editor: Readers can request explanations or comment on articles published in the
journal. The decision to publish these letters lies on the Editorial Board.
Book review: Brief critical writings on books about health and biomedicine.
Preparation of the manuscript
Please follow the guidelines of the International
Committee of Medical Journal Editors that are published
as “Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of
Scholarly Work in Medical Journals” (updated December 2013) (http://icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf).
The manuscript must include the following sections:
Presentation page: This section must include the following items:
- Manuscript title (maximum 165 characters)
- Running title for page headlines (maximum 50
characters)
- Spanish title (maximum 165 characters)
- A paragraph with the authors’ full names (include
only first family name)
- The institutional affiliation of each author including the name of their group, institution,
city and country. The link of authors’ names and institutional affiliation should be done using numbers in superscript. Omit positions
held and academic qualifications.
- Name of corresponding author, along with postal
address, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address
- A paragraph stating authors’ specific
contribution to the article.
Abstracts: The manuscript must include a structured abstract (introduction,
objective, materials and methods, results and conclusions) in both Spanish and English,
not longer than 250 words.
The use of references is not allowed in the abstract,
and the inclusion of abbreviations and acronyms is not recommended.
Key words: No more than ten key words in each language are
permitted. Authors are advised to verify the
English keywords in the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
of the Index Medicus available from
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.htm, and the Spanish keywords in Descriptores en Ciencias
de la Salud (DeCS) of
the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences index available from http://decs.bvs.br
Text: All manuscripts, including the presentation page, abstracts, references,
tables and titles of figures and tables, should be in double space. Leave only
a single space after the end of each paragraph. Use Arial font size 12 for the
text and for table and figure titles, and do not justify the text (left
justified). Use italic letters for species names or scientific terms; do not
underline for italicization.
Electronic format: The manuscript must be received as an MS Word™
file, preferably in the 97-2003 version. Figures should come attached to the
Word document and they should be sent preferably in a
300 dpi tiff format. Graphics made with Power Point™ or MS Word programs are
not acceptable because of low resolution. Illustrations are
printed in a single column (75 mm) or in two columns (153 mm),
therefore, illustrations must be sent in one of these two print sizes. In the
case of color illustrations, please use CMYK files in a high
resolution tiff format. The best resolution for CMYK files is 300 dpi if
the image does not include text. If the image includes text, the recommended
resolution is 600 dpi; if it is black and white, the recommended resolution is
1200 dpi. The recommended font for graphics is Helvetic. If your files are
Macintosh, please convert them to one of the above formats. A complete list of
the files must be sent including the names of the
programs in which they were formatted.
Acknowledgements: Authors should certify that persons mentioned in the Acknowledgements
have been informed and they have agreed to it. This is not required in the case
of institutions.
Conflicts of interest and financial support
statements: Authors must
place these statements before the References section in separate paragraphs.
Biomédica subscribes the ICMJE
recommendations in this respect and adopts their format for the statement of
potential conflicts of interest, which should be filled out
individually by each author and sent along with the letter of submission.

References: Strict adherence to the guidelines of the uniform requirements for
manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals is required. A number is assigned to each reference as it appears in the
manuscript, the tables and figures in ascending order. The reference numbers are placed within parenthesis (not as indices or
superscripts).
Personal communications, unpublished data,
manuscripts in preparation or submitted for publication, and abstracts
presented at congresses or other scientific meetings must not be numbered but
rather referenced in the text within parenthesis.
Consult the periodical publications list of Index Medicus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd7serials7lij.html) for
exact abbreviations of journal names. If the journal is not
listed, write its full title. Include only the first six authors of the
article, followed by et al. The inclusion of national and
Latin-American references is recommended. For this
purpose, please consult Lilacs, Latindex, Sibra, or Colciencia’s indices,
and other pertinent bibliographic sources.

Regarding microscope slides, include the staining
and lens increase in the objective, but do not include the value of the ocular.
In the case of tables or figures previously
published, an authorization by the copyright holder should be
attached for publication in Biomédica.
Manuscript submission

signed by all authors stating that they know the contents of the manuscript,
that they agree to its submission for publication in Biomédica, and

Microorganisms scientific names should be written in full the first time
