Resumen: El cuerpo humano es un infinito objeto de estudio. Un tema complejo que el pensamiento occidental ha investigado a fondo con todas las herramientas de sus disciplinas a lo largo de la historia. Esta tesis doctoral quiere contribuir de manera original a la historia del cuerpo en la cultura mediterránea occidental y sobre todo en Italia, entre los años 1900 y 1943, estudiando la representación del cuerpo en el mundo de la numismática. Esta investigación corresponde a un estudio sistemático de la iconografía numismática de las representaciones del cuerpo en la cultura mediterránea antigua, renacentista y moderna, contribuyendo con un estudio específico del Reino de Italia de la primera mitad del siglo xx.

Cuerpo y dinero representan dos elementos tradicionalmente considerados antitéticos, que han tenido a menudo una connotación negativa en la historia occidental y a veces hasta demoníaca, dictada por el pensamiento filosófico y religioso. El nacimiento de la moneda con su universo de representaciones simbólicas es un fenómeno importante para nuestra sociedad que testimonia y justifica de manera significativa la transformación de sus instituciones políticas y sociales de aquellos entes arcaicos a los actuales, legitima el poder establecido en los territorios de uso, comunica mensajes y valores y se relaciona estrechamente con la difusión del pensamiento abstracto y racional.

El trabajo se divide en cuatro partes. La primera define el marco teórico de la investigación, introduciendo los conceptos de cuerpo, monedas y numismática en el mundo “occidental”. La segunda traza una historia de la representación del cuerpo en las monedas desde sus orígenes hasta la Modernidad. La tercera analiza la representación del cuerpo en un contexto numismático bien definido: el Reino de Italia en el siglo xx (1900-1943) pero con dos periodos distintos y muy definidos correspondientes a las monarquía parlamentaria de Victor Manuel III (1900-1922) y del Fascismo con Benito Mussolini (1922-1943). En cada período se relaciona la situación política, económica y social del país con la idea de cuerpo contemporánea y se analiza como estas ideas han sido reflejadas y representadas por el poder político en las monedas. En la cuarta parte se ha elaborado un Catálogo de las emisiones de monedas del Reino de Italia que representan la figura humana en su iconografía y se realiza un análisis comparativo entre la inmensa iconografía numismática italiana del período con temática relativa al cuerpo humano con otros dos países europeos mediterráneos en el período similar, Francia y España.

Abstract: The human body is an infinite object of study and a complex subject that Western thought has thoroughly investigated with all the tools of its disciplines throughout history. This doctoral thesis seeks to make an original contribution to the history of the body in Western Mediterranean culture and especially in Italy between 1900 and 1943 by studying the representation of the body in the world of numismatics. It is a systematic study of the numismatic iconography of the representations of the body in ancient, Renaissance and modern Mediterranean culture and contributes a specific study of the Kingdom of Italy in the first half of the 20th century.

Body and money are two elements traditionally considered antithetical and which have often had a negative and sometimes even demonic connotation in Western history prescribed by philosophical and religious thought. The advent of coins with their universe of symbolic representations is an important event for our society that significantly testifies to and justifies the transformation of its political and social institutions from archaic entities to contemporary ones, legitimises the power established in the territories of use, conveys messages and values and is closely related to the spread of abstract and rational thinking.

The paper is divided into four parts. The first defines the theoretical framework of the research, introducing the concepts of body, coins and numismatics in the “Western” world. The second outlines a history of the representation of the body on coins from their origins to modernity. The third analyses the representation of the body in a distinct numismatic context: the Kingdom of Italy in the 20th century (1900-1943) but in two distinct and well-defined periods corresponding to the parliamentary monarchy of King Victor Emmanuel III (1900-1922) and Fascism with Benito Mussolini (1922- 1943). In each period the political, economic and social situation of the country is related to the contemporary idea of a body, and how these ideas have been reflected and represented on coins by the political authorities is analysed. In the fourth part, a catalogue of coin issues by the Kingdom of Italy representing the human figure in their iconography has been drawn up and comparative analysis is conducted between the immense Italian numismatic iconography of the period involving themes relating to the human body with two other European Mediterranean countries in the same period, France and Spain.
